Dr. Mark D. Miller is the S. Ward Casscells Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedic Surgery and former Division Head of Sports Medicine at the University of Virginia. He is a retired Colonel in the US Air Force. Dr. Miller was a Distinguished Graduate of the US Air Force Academy and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He served in the Air Force as a Civil Engineer and earned his Professional Engineering (PE) certificate prior to medical school. He then completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, and a Sports Medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He served as a surgeon and team physician at the Air Force Academy and as Chief of Sports Medicine and Deputy Chairman at Wilford Hall prior to serving as Division Chief of Sports Medicine at UVA for 20 years. Dr. Miller also served as Head Team Physician for James Madison University for 15 years. He is responsible for training over 100 orthopaedic residents and 40 fellows and has earned resident teaching awards three times in his career.

Dr. Miller has authored over 250 peer-reviewed articles and has authored and/or edited 40 textbooks. He has served in numerous leadership positions for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and is a Past President. He was awarded the AOSSM George Rovere Award for Education, the USUHS Distinguished Service Award, and the Virginia Orthopaedic Society Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Miller also has three US Patents to his credit.

Mark is married to Ann Etchison and is a proud father of four successful adult children. He enjoys skiing, golfing, and time with his ten grandchildren. In addition to travel, he plans to remain involved in teaching and mentoring at the University in his retirement.
