Lucas De Virgilio, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon at the University of Miami specializing in pediatric and adult sports medicine, with expertise in arthroscopy and minimally invasive procedures of the hip, knee, and shoulder. Originally from Argentina, he grew up active in sports and understands both the excitement of competition and the challenges of recovering from injury. A former club soccer player at Syracuse University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, he brings a personal perspective to his care.
Dr. De Virgilio is dual fellowship–trained, completing medical school and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Puerto Rico, an adult sports medicine fellowship at the University of Miami, and advanced pediatric and adolescent sports medicine training at Boston Children’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School.
Whether he’s helping young children focused on a single sport, multi-sport teenagers, weekend warriors, or adults staying active later in life, Dr. De Virgilio’s goal is to return each patient safely to the activities they love. Having undergone surgery for a sports injury himself, he understands the emotional and physical demands of recovery. He takes time to learn every patient’s goals and priorities, creating personalized treatment plans and ensuring they leave with a clear understanding of their diagnosis, next steps, and recovery expectations.
Dr. De Virgilio has published and presented research on shoulder and knee conditions in pediatric and adult populations. He has also served as a team doctor for athletes at every level, including at the professional level covering the Miami Marlins, as well as Division 1 (University of Miami) and Division 3 (Babson College) college programs, high school football teams, and organizations such as the Skating Club of Boston.
Outside of medicine, he enjoys watching and playing sports, eating out and trying new restaurants, and traveling whenever possible.
