Dr. Smith completed undergraduate education at the University of Michigan, followed by medical school and orthopaedic residency. His sports medicine fellowship was under Dr. Jack C. Hughston in Columbus Georgia. He joined the Columbia Orthopaedic Group in 1986. He served the University of Missouri athletic program for 36 years including 30 years as Head Team Physician. In 2010, Dr. Smith was appointed Director of the Sports Medicine Division at the University of Missouri in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, a position he held for 10 years. Also in 2010, he cofounded the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Missouri which continues today with two fellows a year. In 2020, he was named Adjunct Clinical Professor in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Missouri.
Dr. Smith has been extensively involved in orthopaedic research with numerous peer reviewed publications. He performed the first FDA sanctioned safety study on the use of platelet rich plasma to treat knee osteoarthritis. He also has been a pioneer in the use of internal bracing for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair and reconstruction. Dr. Smith is a member of numerous professional organizations including AAOS, AOSSM, AANA and the ACL Study Group.
He has been inducted in the Missouri Trainers Hall of Fame and then in 2015, he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. In 2023, the University of Missouri Sports Medicine Center was renamed the “Patrick A. Smith Sports Medicine Center” in his honor.
Dr. Smith and Karen, his wife of 44 years, have five children: one son Kyle, and four daughters- Kelly, Holly, Tracy and Shelby. He now is blessed with 7 grandchildren.
