Dr. Tyler J. Uppstrom is a board-eligible orthopedic surgeon at Boston Medical Center (BMC). Dr. Uppstrom is also Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.
Born and raised in Sutton, MA, Dr. Uppstrom received his Bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where he graduated with honors. Dr. Uppstrom received his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, where he continued his research efforts and was awarded the T. Campbell Thompson Award, given to the most outstanding graduating student entering the field of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Following medical school, Dr. Uppstrom completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Uppstrom completed his advanced fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Steadman Clinic/Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, CO. Following his fellowship training, Dr. Uppstrom was awarded the 2025-2026 Herodicus Society Traveling Fellowship, an opportunity to visit and learn from world leaders in sports medicine.
Throughout his training, Dr. Uppstrom has been involved in caring for athletes at the recreational, high school, collegiate, professional and Olympic levels, including the MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, and US Ski & Snowboard Team. Dr. Uppstrom currently serves as a team physician for Boston University athletics and US Ski & Snowboard Team.
Dr. Uppstrom’s clinical interests and expertise include primary and revision knee ligament reconstruction, cartilage and meniscus injury, patellofemoral pathology, osteotomy, shoulder instability, rotator cuff tears, total shoulder arthroplasty (anatomic and reverse), and hip arthroscopy. Dr. Uppstrom is committed to providing patients with exceptional, evidence-based, compassionate care to all patients, with the goal of improving patients’ quality of life and returning them to the activities they enjoy.
