Marc R. Safran, MD is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Stanford University. He is also the Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at Stanford. He completed his undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley (Cal) and medical school at Duke University. He did his residency at UCLA, where he also spent a year doing research under an NIH research grant. After residency, he completed his Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.
He is a team physician for Stanford Athletics, as well as for many Olympic, college, professional athletes. He also cares for De Anza junior college, Menlo College (NAIA), and the Menlo School (high school). Dr. Safran is a consultant for the NBA Players’ Association and the NHL Players’ Association. He is Chief Orthopaedic Consultant Emeritus for the Women’s Tennis Association, former team physician for the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) and the Oakland A’s (MLB) and the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association. He is a past president of ISAKOS (International Society for Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine) and ISHA (International Society for Hip Arthroscopy and Preservation). He has been a board member of the AOSSM (American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine) and ASES (American Shoulder and Elbow Society), and currently is a board member of the Magellan Society. Dr. Safran is on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of ISAKOS, and the Journal of Hip Preservation Surgery.
Dr. Safran organized the MAHORN Group that developed and validated the International Hip Outcomes Tool (iHOT). Dr. Safran recently founded and organized HipSTR (Hip Surgical Treatment Registry) – the first North American Hip Arthroscopy Registry, a physician owned and run international outcomes registry, that was released in 2023 (www.HipSTR.org) .
