Ajay Shah, MD, MSc (Candidate), is an Orthopaedic Surgery Resident (PGY-3) at the University of Toronto and a Clinician Investigator Program trainee in the Institute of Medical Science.
Dr. Shah’s academic focus centers on complex knee injuries, regenerative medicine, and the integration of artificial intelligence into orthopaedic surgery. His research program bridges clinical outcomes, biologic therapies, and innovation in musculoskeletal care. He is currently leading a pilot randomized controlled trial investigating recombinant human growth hormone (HGH) for knee osteoarthritis, supported by competitive institutional and innovation grants. This work forms the basis of his Master’s thesis and reflects his broader interest in advancing non-operative and biologically driven treatments for joint disease.
In addition to his clinical trial work, Dr. Shah has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed publications spanning sports medicine, arthroplasty, trauma, and surgical methodology. His scholarship includes systematic reviews, matched cohort studies, and epidemiologic investigations, with presentations at national and international meetings. He has received multiple distinctions, including the Lawson Award for the top Orthopaedic In-Training Examination score in his program and recognition as a finalist for an international AOSSM innovation grant in sports medicine.
Dr. Shah is also actively engaged in collaborative research initiatives exploring growth hormone–releasing peptides, chronic ACL deficiency, and large-scale orthopaedic data science applications. He is pursuing formal training in artificial intelligence and innovation in medicine, with the goal of developing tools to enhance surgical decision-making, performance assessment, and patient outcomes.
Through his clinical training and research leadership, Dr. Shah is committed to advancing evidence-based, technology-enabled, and biologically informed care for athletes and patients with complex knee pathology.
