Joseph L. Yellin, MD, is an attending orthopedic surgeon with the Orthopedic Center and the Sports Medicine and Performance Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
Dr. Yellin earned a bachelor’s degree in Biological Basis of Behavior from the University of Pennsylvania and earned his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Before his fourth year of medical school, Dr. Yellin pursued research as a Benjamin Fox Orthopaedic Research Fellow at CHOP, confirming his interest in pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine. During this year, he also served as the assistant coach for a few Olympic-bound USA gymnasts.
Dr. Yellin completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program in Boston, MA before returning to CHOP as a pediatric orthopedic surgery fellow. He spent a portion of this year with a focus on the intricacies of optimal surgical management of young athletes with pediatric sports conditions. He then went on to complete an additional fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Surgery at Penn, where he had the privilege of working with many high school athletes, collegiate athletes (Penn Football, Penn Basketball, Penn Wrestling, Penn Gymnastics), and professional teams (Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers).
Dr. Yellin’s philosophy of care is centered on a team approach, working closely with patients and their families in addition to our entire orthopedic team (including athletic trainers and physical therapists) to build a comprehensive and supportive environment for patients to successfully recover, optimize their performance, and accomplish their goals.
Dr. Yellin’s research interests include: pediatric through elite level sports medicine, ACL reconstruction in physeal immature through skeletally mature athletes, shoulder instability, meniscus preservation and replacement surgery, treatment of cartilage lesions (OCD lesions), elbow injuries including UCL repair and reconstruction, throwing and the overhead athlete, pediatric orthopedic trauma and fracture care.
