Dr. Eric McCarty is the Chief of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery and Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is a nationally and internationally recognized sports medicine trained orthopedic surgeon and shoulder specialist. He also is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Additionally, Dr. McCarty serves as the head team physician for the University of Colorado athletic teams and is past head team physician for the Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club and Denver University athletics.

Dr. McCarty has a long-time interest in sports medicine, athletics and particularly football. His passion for treating the active individual stems from his experience at the University of Colorado, where he excelled and received numerous honors for his exploits in the classroom as well as on the football field as he was an All Big-Eight linebacker and was an Academic All-American. After a brief stint in professional football, he pursued medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University and fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Dr. McCarty is very active in research, teaching, education, and leadership in the field of sports medicine and knee and shoulder surgery. He has has more than 300 publications in the field of sports medicine and has been the recipient of numerous national research honors, including the prestigious AAOS Kappa Delta Award and multiple AOSSM research awards. He was a founding member of the Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) and continues to contribute to major multicenter research collaborations.

Active in numerous professional societies including AOSSM, ISAKOS, AANA, and ASES, Dr. McCarty currently serves as President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
