Walter R. Lowe, MD, is a nationally recognized Houston orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert with more than 30 years of experience. He serves as chair and professor of orthopedic surgery at UTHealth Houston and leads orthopedic services at Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center and LBJ General Hospital. He also directs the Memorial Hermann | Rockets Sports Medicine Institute, a premier center for orthopedic and sports injury care in Houston, Texas.
Board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Lowe specializes in sports medicine with particular expertise in knee and ligament injuries. He is a leader in ACL reconstruction and advanced surgical techniques designed to restore strength, stability, and performance. Known for his patient-centered approach, he helps athletes recover safely and return to competition with confidence.
Dr. Lowe serves as head team physician for the NBA’s Houston Rockets and the University of Houston Cougars, overseeing all aspects of athlete health and performance. He previously served for 20 years as head team physician for the NFL’s Houston Texans. In addition, he provides sports injury care for several Houston-area high schools and supports Texas A&M Athletics as a team physician.
Committed to education and mentorship, Dr. Lowe trains future orthopedic surgeons through hands-on instruction, clinical guidance, and fellowship training in sports medicine.
He earned his Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. After completing his internship at John Peter Smith Hospital, he pursued orthopedic training in Fort Worth, Texas, and completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles under the late Frank Jobe, MD.
Dr. Lowe is an active member of leading professional organizations and has received numerous honors recognizing his leadership and contributions to sports medicine.
